Lizards For Lunch

We had a young watermelon patch that needed hoeing. It was summer and school was out, so one of my cousins came to help us hoe. He was a few years older than I.
My Dad played a few tricks on us, so we were trying to find some way to get back at him. As we walked and hoed the long rows, we noticed lizards running from almost every watermelon hill. So my cousin began to catch them and put them in his pockets.
We figured out a way to get back at Dad, we just had to convince my Mother to help us get the prank done. Mother always sat the table with the plates turned upside down. So we asked her if we could hid the lizards under Dads plate. She finally agreed, as she had witnessed some of his tricks on us.
We got the lizards all tucked under his plate, and hurried outside to the wash stand, where the wash pan was filled with water and the soap and towels near by. Dad walked up just as we were finished, we hurried inside and sat down at the table. He came in sat down, and said, I am so tired, I couldn't move another inch. Just then he turned his plate over, lizards ran out, Mom jumped up and began brushing them onto him, so they would not get into the food. My cousin and I were laughing so hard the tears were running down our cheeks. We did not get a whipping, but we sure got a lot more tricks pulled on us the rest of the week.
