The Bitter Truth |
|
The persimmon is a very tasty
fruit when it's dead ripe, but, as you know, terribly bitter until then.
This is why we liked to feed the unripe ones to the town kids. Sometimes
it took a little convincing, but we usually conned them into trying one.
We usually had to eat one first just to prove to them how really delicious
they were. Of course the ones we would eat were ripe and theirs would just
look ripe/ Many were the times that we fed one to an urban-bred fellow and
watched and laughed as he spat it out and then tried to talk. Actually one
could, but it puckered the mouth and made it difficult to do so. Town kids
had their ways of putting down country kids and we had our own ways of
making them look ridiculous too---when they were on our turf. |
