Funeral services for Lamar
resident, Leroy Smith, were held on Friday, June 3 at 2 p.m. at
Hudson-Phillips Chapel in Holdenville, Oklahoma with James Branscum
officiating.
Mr. Smith was born May 5, 1915 in Van Buren, AR. to
Monroe Jesse Smith and Winnie Rose (Cullum) Smith and died in
Holdenville, Oklahoma on May 31, 2005 at the age of 90. He was raised in
the Van Buren area and moved to Pecan Grove, north of Holdenville, as a
teenager. In 1935 Mr. Smith moved to Lamar where he spent the remainder
of his life. He played professional baseball from 1935 until 1936; he
was paid $1 per day. Leroy married Sylvia Mae Goodson on June 4, 1939 in
Horntown, Oklahoma and the couple began a lifetime of farming and
ranching. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Lamar and enjoyed
hunting, fishing and doing carpentry work.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and
Winnie (Cullum) Smith; brothers. Jack, Bun, Leon, William, Robert, Bill
and Lee; two brothers-in-law, Sam Aldridge and Bill Foster; great
grandchildren, Raelynn Smith, Russell Lee Smith and Sawyer Levi Smith.
Survivors are his wife, Sylvia, of the home; two
sisters, Mary Aldridge and Shirley Foster, both of Minneola, TX.; sons,
Donald Smith of Henryetta and Douglas Smith of Texas; daughters, Connie
and Bruce Bennett of Ada, Marilyn and Rowdy Kincade of Wewoka; three
granddaughters, Brandi and Brian Adams of Seminole, Michelle and Terry
Don West, and Kathy and Ken Bailey, all of Henryetta; five grandsons,
Keith Kincade of Wewoka, Kevin and Laura Kincade of Seminole, Kerry and
Jennifer Kincade of Wewoka, Lynn and Kristy Smith, and Brian and DeAnn
Smith of Holdenville; 10 great granddaughters, Kassie, Katelyn, Kaliann,
Kendell, Khanaa, Madison, Stevi and Elizabeth Ann Kincade, Gracie, Ava
and Marin Adams and Angel and BryAnn Smith; six great grandsons. Chance
Doty, Trey West, Kade and Kanon Bailey, Jackson Kincade and Cole Smith;
numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Pallbearers were Mr. Smith's grandchildren, Brian and
Lynn Smith, Keith, Kevin and Kerry Kincade, Brandi Adams, Michelle West
and Kathy Bailey. Honorary bearers were Dick Low, Orville McKenzie, John
Freeman, Lonnie Arthur, Donnie Smith, Howard Upchurch, Joel Freeman and
Bill Pack.
Interment was at Lamar Cemetery under the direction of
Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home.
