Our beloved wife, mother, sister, niece and friend, Rita M. Smith, went to be with the Lord on the 29th day of January, 2008. She was born to Warren and Marcella Pettit Whittemore on January 1, 1951 and later attended Moss and Holdenville schools. She graduated from the Los Alamos 6A high school in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Rita loved music and had a beautiful voice. She won awards and honors including the Outstanding Talent Award just before graduating and continued singing after returning to Holdenville.
On August 15, 1970, she married the love of her life, Bobby W. Smith, and their love of each other was rewarded by two loving and dedicated sons, Matt and wife, Mickella, of Ada and Mitch and wife, Trisha, of Moore. She also had a stepson, Mark, whom she loved as her own, of Oklahoma City.
Rita was known as “Nini” to her loved grandchildren, Presli, of Ada and Braydyn, Gage and Isabella, of Moore. Rita was famous for loving little babies and children. Some of her very best times were rocking and cuddling her children and grandchildren. She even said, "besides rocking them, all curled up, wrapped up and tightened up, the very best thing is to do all that, and snuggle up and sleep the afternoon away. Babies are God’s greatest and most precious gift to me!”
Rita enjoyed her friends, too. She visited them daily– on the telephone. She read her Bible and prayed. She worshiped at First Baptist Church and was a longtime member. Her life, in addition to God, was her husband, her children and her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Marcella Whittemore, her grandparents, R.A. and Goldie Pettit and father-in-law, Norb Smith. Besides her husband, children and grandchildren, she is survived by two sisters, Carla Armstrong and Warna Lynn and husband, Paul Huff; and uncle and aunt, Tommy and Reba Pettit; mother-in-law, Nadine Smith, all of the Holdenville area. Additionally, two brothers-in-law, Stan and his wife, Donna Brown, of Oklahoma City and Butch Smith and wife, Judy, of Holdenville; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
