Services for Grady B. “Pat” Callaway, 80, Ada are
2 p.m. Wednesday at Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Gary Jamar
will officiate. Burial will follow at Holdenville Cemetery.
Mr. Callaway died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at a local
hospital. He was born June 24, 1924, in Holdenville to Jim and Mary Pugh
Callaway. He graduated from Moss High School. He lived in the
Holdenville, Konawa and Ada areas all his life. He was a baseball
player with the American Legion, Holdenville and Ada teams. For more
than 40 years, he owned a ranch southwest of Ada, where he raised cattle
and quarter and paint horses. He was a charter member of the Ada Area
Roundup Club. He and his horse, “Rum Dum” won many high point awards in
the “Over 40” play day events. He also won points in the Oklahoma State
Roundup Club Association state finals. Pat participated in play day
events and won his last award at the age of 76.
He married Ethel Marie “Sue” Burns Nov. 18, 1944. She
died July 25, 1979. He married Kay Current Balthrop Nov. 21, 1980, in
Ada.
Mr. Callaway owned and operated Pat’s Dairy Princess in
the 1960s. He later owned and operated Callaway Ranch, a trucking
business hauling grain and rock. After retirement, he worked as a
custodian at Latta School until he became ill.
Mr. Callaway was a member of Morris Memorial Baptist
Church since 1967. He taught Sunday school classes for many years, sang
in the choir, and was active in outreach programs.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Balthrop Callaway, of
the home; one daughter, Nancy Marie Harris, Ada; one son, Steven B.
Callaway, Ada; two granddaughters, Melissa Harris Johnson and husband
Danny, Ada, Shawna Harris Gray and husband Wes, Ada; great grandsons,
Tagen Eldred, Roff, Patrick Nickell, Ada and Blane Burk, Ada; a great
granddaughter, Stephanni Burk, Ada; five sisters, Lennie Noblett, Elmore
City, Rena Merriman, Morro Bay, Calif.; Jocie McBride, Salado, Ark.,
Dortha Merriman, Holdenville, and Wilma Robins and husband Bud, Bristow;
two brothers, Emet Callaway, Guymon, and Lennard Callaway and wife Nan,
Norman; stepson, Tracy Kent Balthrop, Ada; stepdaughter, Dee Ann Jones
and husband Ron, Ada; step granddaughter, Shanda Kay Balthrop Williams,
Tulsa; step great-granddaughter, Lena Grace Williams, Tulsa;
sister-in-law, Georgia Current Myers and husband Jimmy, Fittstown;
brothers-in-law, Gerald Current and wife Mary, Ada and Lonnie Current
and wife Carol, Longtown; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Sue
Callaway March 11, 1947, his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Bearers will be his nephews. Honorary bearers will be
Ples Blaylock, Jim Jackson and members of his Sunday school class.
