Our Sincere Sympathy

Kathryn (Shumard) Burkett
December 15, 1923 - June 1, 2016

A Moss Graduate

Kathryn (Shumard) Burkett passed away at her home on June 1, 2016, and joined her Lord Jesus. The birds and angels are singing a little louder today when Jesus took her by the hand and led her to her eternal home. A reunion she has longed for, for many years. Kathryn, or Katy as known by her family and close friends, was an inspiration to so very many after the tragedies she endured throughout her life and always leaned on her Lord. She would admit that it wasn’t easy but gives all the credit to God, never turning her back on her Savior. Kathryn was saved and baptized at an early age and took it very serious from that day forward.
Kathryn had been a Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher at Banner Baptist Church for many years, and lived her life so that her faith beamed from her. Her thoughtfulness, caring, sacrificing love was known to so many friends and family. Kathryn was employed with Burton/Roberts IGA where she worked in the bakery and was lovingly known as the ‘cookie lady’.
Kathryn was born December 15, 1923 to Nora (Bowden) Shumard and Chester B. Shumard, southeast of Holdenville. Her Dad nicknamed her ‘Dutch’ because of her very black hair and skin color. She met the love of her life, Walter Neil Burkett, at Moss School. After graduation, she moved to Okmulgee and worked at Kress Drug Store. She returned home and worked for R. B. Knight. The very beautiful, petite girl and very handsome, tall young man married in 1947 making their home at Horntown and were soulmates forever. When he passed at the age of 39, he took part of her with him. Kathryn was left to raise three young children, who always came first in her life. Kathryn loved her daily vigorously one mile walk through summer and winter. Though she wasn’t able to walk as far, she continued to walk until she became ill with bronchitis. She loved nothing more than spending time with her daughter, son-in-law, grandchildren and especially her great grandson. Kathryn loved baking and cooking, watching and feeding the wild birds, was proud of her rose bushes. She especially loved reading her Bible and serving her Lord.
A void will be left in our hearts forever, however we rejoice with her being in Paradise. Those going before her include her husband, Walter Neil Burkett, son Bradley Lee Burkett, son David Neil Burkett, parents Nora (Bowden) Shumard and Chester Boy Shumard, siblings Rosaline Fennell and Harry Shumard.
Mother/Grandma Katy leaves behind, to carry in our hearts, her remaining family, daughter Debi Moore and husband Bob Moore, granddaughter Angela K. Brooks, grandson Adam Neil Johnson and the light of her life great grandson Dakota Neil Brooks, very special friends Jordan Sanford, B.J. Grote, and Dixie Wheat, several nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 at Texas Banner Church of God with Rev. Joe Lunsford and Bill Robinson officiating. Pallbearers were Adam Johnson, Dakota Brooks, Scott Price, John Massad, Wesley Hill, and Harvey Price. Honorary pallbearers were Osceola Powell, Chris Powell, Rusty Bible and Tommy Summy. Interment will follow at the Holdenville Cemetery in Holdenville, Oklahoma.
Kathryn is in her real home, as she would say and we celebrate her life God so richly blessed us with because of her. Her wish was a celebration which we will try our best to honor.
