Harry Vanburen Shumard
May 30, 1926 - October 10, 2005

1943 Moss Graduate

     Harry Vanburen Shumard, 79, of Van Buren, Arkansas was called home to be with his Lord  Monday, Oct. 10, 2005, at Hope’s Creek assisted living center surrounded by his family. Harry had fought a courageous battle with cancer for several years.

     Harry was born on May 30, 1926 to Chester B. and Nora Ellen Bowden Shumard in Holdenville, Ok. He attended Moss School where he graduated in 1943. He moved to Oklahoma City where he was a pilot for the United States Air Force. Later he had his own business in upholstering and taught classes at Mid-Del Vo Tech. He traveled selling product for Peachtree Fabric and was foreman of the shipping department of Wilson & Co. Harry was a retired fire fighting Captain, operated the Fire Department and was Oklahoma City’s first Fire Safety Officer. He retired from the Oklahoma City Fire Department with 20 years of service. Harry was  past president and former volunteer for the Natural Dam Volunteer Fire Department,  a member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren, a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner. He enjoyed writing many stories for a Horntown website, gardening, the outdoors and his family.

     In July, 1977, Harry moved to his retirement dream home upon a mountain set outside of Natural Dam, Arkansas in the Ozark National Forest where he lived until his move to Hope’s Creek in 2004.

      Preceding him death are his parents Chester and Nora Shumard, a sister, Rosaline Fennell, a brother in law, Walter Burkett, nephew’s, Bradley Burkett and David Burkett.     He is survived by his wife, Betty Shumard of the home, a daughter, Paula Butler and husband Doug of Natural Dam, AR, two sons, Mike Shumard and wife Karen of Natural Dam, AR and Greg Shumard and wife Deborah of Oklahoma City, OK, seven grandchildren and a sister, Kathryn Burkett of Wetumka, OK who he shared a deep closeness and a niece and nephew’s who considered him a very special Uncle.

      Funeral services with Fire Department Honor Guard were held Oct. 12, 2005 at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Hall Cemetery in Natural Dam under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren. Harry was laid to rest surrounded by a forest of trees.

     Pallbearers were Grandsons, Nathan Butler, Brandon Shumard, Cody Butler and Treve Girdner, Richard Emberton and T. J. Brown.
