Funeral services for
Charlene Upchurch were scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30,
2006, at the First
Church of God in Holdenville. Burial followed at McMahan Cemetery under
the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home with Rev. Jon Ewers, Rev.
Dale Jennings and Rev. Doris Upchurch officiating.
Mrs. Upchurch passed away in Norman on Wednesday, Dec.
27, 2006 at 73 years of age. She was born Jan. 20, 1933 in Hughes County
to Odus and Gladys Bernard Stringfellow. Charlene attended Moss Schools
and on Feb. 26, 1949 she married Howard Upchurch at the First Church of
God Parsonage in Holdenville.
She was raised in the Moss area until moving to
Seminole after marrying Howard, where they lived until 1976 when
Howard's work moved them to East Texas. They returned to Hughes County
in 1986. Charlene was a longtime member of the First Church of God and
was a charter member of the church's quilting group. She enjoyed caring
for her home and family, especially baking and making dozens of cookies
and pies to try to get everyone's favorite. Charlene participated in the
Lamar Senior Citizen's annual "Nashville Now" fundraiser and she enjoyed
life and people almost as much as they enjoyed her.
Her parents and a great- grandchild, Holden Hughes,
preceded her in death. Surviving is her husband, Howard Upchurch, of the
home; four children, Charlotte Horton and husband, Dave, of Seminole,
Oklahoma, Kathy Johns and husband, Les, of Eufaula, Oklahoma, Jim
Upchurch and wife, Kay, of Tecumseh, Oklahoma and Angelia Upchurch of
Holdenville, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Cheryl Stevens of Seminole,
Oklahoma, Alicia Hughes and husband, Jeromy, of Pampa, Texas, Courtney
Upchurch of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Kristi Splawn and husband, Chris, of
Asher, Oklahoma. Charlene leaves three great- grandchildren, Hunter
Hughes, Brittney Stevens and Mackenzie Stevens; brothers and sisters,
Juanita Brown of Holdenville, Oklahoma, Jeannie Harmon of Holdenville,
Oklahoma, Lloyd Stringfellow and wife, Ina, of Holdenville, Oklahoma,
Harold Dean Stringfellow and wife, Francis, of Jacksonville, Arkansas,
Patsy Hladik and husband, Gene, of Wichita, Kansas and Billie Lynn
Leewright of Holdenville, Oklahoma along with a host of nieces, nephews,
and dear friends.
Pallbearers were Billy Brown, Ronnie Callaway, Donnie
Callaway, Jim Callaway, Elton Clark, Jackie Brown, and Mark Summy.
Serving as Honorary quilters are Alyne Smith, Geraldine Smith, Wilma
Thetford, Lucy Little, Melba Cook, Nell Faircloth, Wanda Booher and
Kathy Bragg.
