People became ill now and then — not often though, for this is a healthy place. Dr. Adams came, followed a little later by Dr. Adkins, and Dr. Boyce, the uncle of Sam Boyce of the Boyce Nursing Home in Holdenvllle, Dr. Rogers, Dr. M. Lett, two Dr. Combests (brothers) and much later a Dr. Baker. W.A. Waits started a drug store to supply medicine and to fill prescriptions. A Mr. Mitchell soon started another drug store. Later druggists who operated stores here were Mex York, Lonnie Sherrill, and Earl Foster, late father of Bill Foster, Holdenville druggist. H. P. Martin saw another need; so he secured one of the stone buildings constructed by Mr. Franklin on Main Street. Here he opened the first general store in 1908. The same year John Yarbrough opened a similar business. A. L. Halford had established a business in 1910. J. W. Stalcup started another general store In 1911. Mr. Keathley whose son lives south of Wetumka, ran a store until 1912. Al Bergland had a thriving business in Lamar from 1909 until 1913 when he sold his general store to J. H. Bailey and his son, Harrison Bailey. Mrs. Opal Jones, daughter of Harrison, still lives in Lamar. Page 2 |
